How to Tie a Directional Figure-of-Eight Loop for Climbing

A directional figure-of-eight loop is used for climbing. It's a load-bearing knot that is created so that the load can be carried parallel to the rope. Directional figure eight knots are tied to a ring, carabiner or harness. This knot is easy to remember and tie. Follow these steps to learn how to tie a directional figure-of-eight loop for climbing.

      Twist a bight of the climbing rope. This will make a loop in the end of the climbing rope.

      Wrap the bitter end of the climbing rope around the standing end. Pull it through the loop to form the figure-of-eight.

      Insert the end of the climbing rope back up in to the figure-of-eight knot. This will cause the rope to become parallel to itself.

      Trace the figure-of-eight know with the rope. This will make a two stranded figure eight.

      Tie a stopper knot on the standing end of the directional figure-of-eight loop. The tail end is used to carry the load.

      Attach your ring, carabiner or harness to the tail end of the directional figure-of-eight loop. Inspect your climbing rope again.
