How to Rappel With a Figure-8 Device

Rappelling with the use of a rope is often done as part of recreational rock climbing. Rappelling is also performed during tactical and combat training, and in field situations. Controlling your descent in a safe manner is of utmost importance when rappelling. The use of a specialized braking device known as a figure-8 is used to securely control the line during a descent. Learning to properly rig and use a figure-8 is an essential climbing skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a climbing harness that fits you securely. Refer to the manufacturer-s information for sizing and proper adjustment when putting on a harness.

    • 2

Hold a figure-8 with one hand and a rope that is securely anchored with the other. Make sure the rope is securely anchored to a sturdy object such as a tree. Position the figure-8 so the large and small holes are accessible.

    • 3

Double the rope to form a loop. Insert the loop through the large hole of the figure-8. Pull the loop up and over the small end of the figure-8. Pull the rope to snug the loop down around the smaller end of the figure-8.

    • 4

Attach a locking carabiner to the front of your climbing harness. Open the gate and clip the small hole of the carabiner into the carabiner. Screw the lock down on the carabiner gate to secure the figure-8 in place.

    • 5

Put on gloves and a helmet for safety. Grasp the free end of the rope with your dominant hand and pull it to your side. Grasp the anchored length of rope above the figure-8 with your opposite hand. Use your dominant hand as a brake and your other hand as an anchor point for the rope.

    • 6

Move to the edge of the rock face or structure to be rappelled. Pull slack from the rope through the figure-8. Pull the free end of the rope down and behind you with your dominant hand to lock it in place. Lean back against the anchored end of the rope and begin walking down down the rock face or structure. Release line with your dominant hand as you move downward.
