How to Rappel With 13 mm Rope

Rappelling is a technique used to lower yourself down off cliffs and steep inclines. The process is inherently dangerous and should only be undertaken with a professional or after suitable training. A 13 mm rope is a thick and heavy rope, often used in rescue situations. A 13 mm rope is a fine choice for rappelling, but due to its size requires a larger friction device to set the rope.

Things You'll Need

  • Friction rappel device (XTC, figure-eight) rated to 13 mm rope width
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Gloves
  • Locking carabiner
  • Hand braking device (gris-gris)

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the XTC or large friction device onto your locking carabiner. This is a D-clip with a locking gate. Place the carabiner onto your harness loop. Turn the gate lock on the carabiner all the way clockwise and then back 1/4-turn counterclockwise.

    • 2

Wear gloves and a helmet. Thread the 13 mm rope through your chosen friction device. Run the working end of the rope (the end not attached to the anchor at the top of the cliff) behind you and through the Gris-Gris belay device. This is a self-braking device that allows you to regulate the rope as well as brake, should you slip and release the rope.

    • 3

Anchor the rope at the top of the wall, cliff or incline to rappel off. Set up the anchor using a three-point anchor, meaning it needs to connect to three static points on the top of the cliff.

    • 4

Stand on top of the cliff, looking into the cliff-face. Reach behind and grip the rope and Gris-Gris with one hand. Grip the rope with the other hand above the XTC or friction device.

    • 5

Sit back on your harness and slowly push yourself off the cliff, letting the harness and rope grab you and hold you next to the cliff wall. Grip the rope and let it slowly slide through the friction device and grip the Gris-Gris to release the brake lever.

    • 6

Walk and jump down the cliff by pushing off the wall with your feet and remaining in the sitting position with the harness. Let the rope slide through the Gris-Gris and friction device until you reach the ground safely.
