How to Tie a Knot With One Hand

As you begin to learn basic rope craft and knots, try using just one hand to assemble a starter knot. One of the more frequently used knots in climbing and mountaineering is the Munter hitch knot. Doing a one-hand Munter keeps one hand free to grip a rappel brake or ascender. Keep a chunk of cord next to the bed or sofa and practice doing the one-hand Munter hitch knot while watching TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Drape the cord over the pinky so a bite is formed over the small finger. Keep the pinky pointing up and out.

    • 2

Move the top three fingers over to the inside portion of the cord and loop it up and around the back of the hand.

    • 3

Grip the opposite side of the cord with the pinky, forming a pinch on the cord.

    • 4

Twist your hand backward and use the top three fingers to scoop the pinch cord under the pinky.

    • 5

Push the hitch knot into a carabiner or anchor by sliding the hitch knot off the hand and onto the carabiner gate or onto a fixed anchor.
