How to Tie a Knot With One Hand on Rubber Bands

You need a long rubber band, good hand strength and plenty of finger dexterity to tie one-handed knots into a rubber band. The secret in tying single-hand knots in the stretchy rubber is to use a rubber band long enough so the elasticity is not an issue. Ideally, you want a rubber band so long that you do not use the stretch at all, simply using the rubber band as a long piece of string. The clove hitch is a tension knot suitable for a rubber band. As your skill grows, try using shorter and shorter rubber bands, testing your hand strength and knot prowess. Bar bets have been won with less talent.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your dominant hand so the palm is facing to your side with the thumb up. Drape the rubber band over the thumb and over the palm.

    • 2

Reach over the palm with your pinky and slide the far strand of the rubber band under the pinky. Bring the pinky back to the normal position on the hand. Notice a double loop-cross of the rubber band across the palm.

    • 3

Slide your forefinger, king and ring finger around the inner part of the double-loop and push it under the outer coil and then snap it back to the top of your hand.

Slide the pinky out from the rubber band and see how the knot has now become a tension knot clove-hitch. Slide the clove hitch over poles or stationary objects and pull tight on one end to secure it onto the object.
