How to Tie Monkey Knots

Climbers use a knot called the "Monkey's Fist" to allow them to throw a rope at a great distance, so that its coils do not stop it from moving the desired distance, due to wind interference for many years now. In order to tie this knot properly, you need to have at least 10 feet of rope available. Once the knot has been made, it will be about the size of your fist, hence the name, and allow you to throw the rope at the desired distance and direction.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap one end of the piece of rope around your fingers three times loosely, then pull the end through each of the loops. Do not wrap the rope too tightly around your fingers, so that you can remove your hand without changing the shape you are making with it.

    • 2

Make three more loops around the first three, then pull the end of the rope through the first set of loops that you made once again. You should have three horizontal loops, and three vertical at this point.

    • 3

Pull the end of the rope through the second set of three loops that you made, then wrap it around them three times. There should now be a vertical set of three loops, a horizontal set, and another set of three overlapping the horizontal ones inside the first set.

Pull the end of the rope to tighten the knot, then tie the end of the rope around the the remaining portion to secure it from slipping loose. Now the rope will be ready for you to attempt throwing at much farther distances with accuracy that you would not have otherwise.
