How to Keep the Carabiner from Moving on the Sling

Carabiners are metal D-clips that are either locked or unlocked. Locked versions use a barrel aduster to lock the gate shut, while unlocked versions use a one-way hinge to keep the gate closed. Carabiners are used for rock, ice, mixed and alpine climbing. In addition, carabiners are employed with professional search-and-rescue teams when they set up the system of rescue ropes to extract victims. Carabiners are held on slings for transport. Use a time-tested technique to keep the 'biner from slipping on the sling.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab the sling loop bite -- the enclosed end of the loop -- and twist it over on itself once. The result looks like a small loop at the end of a large loop, somewhat like an off-shaped figure 8.

    • 2

Open the carabiner gate and slip the carabiner end over the small loop and one side of the large loop.

    • 3

Close the carabiner gate. The result is a small self-locking loop within the larger loop, with the carabiner secured in place around the small loop. The carabiner is now static on the sling but still accessible to remove and use during the climb.
