How to Sharpen Climbing Gaffs

- Wooden clamp
- Six-inch mill file
- Cloth
- Sharpening stone

Place your climbing spurs into a wooden clamp to prevent damage to the metallic components. Rotate the lever of the clamp to fasten the spurs in place. Locate the pointed gaffs lnear the base of the spurs.

Hold the six-inch mill file between both of your hands. Lower the teeth of the file onto the base of the gaff. Push the file back and forth to smooth any rough surfaces. Repeat the filing process around the length of the gaff .

Clean off the debris from the filed gaffs using a dry cloth. Lower the sharpening stone onto the base of the gaff. Rub the sharpening stone around the length of the gaff. Test the sharpness of the gaff point with your thumb. Repeat the sharpening process if necessary.
