How to Put on Gaffs for Climbing

Working aloft in treetops or on tall wooden poles is a job that requires strength and skill. Tree trimming and removal companies utilize climbing gaffs to aid in tree climbing, lessening the physical strain of rope and harness climbing. Climbing gaffs can vary on size depending on the weight of the individual and type of climbing, however, they are all quite similar and worn in the same fashion. It takes practice and strength to be able to climb trees or wooden poles using gaffs.

Instructions

    • 1

Step into the climbing stirrups with the gaffs positioned on the inside of the legs. Adjust the gaff height per the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring that they do not strike the ground while walking.

    • 2

Tighten the ankle strap securely but ensuring a comfortable fit by pulling the belt through the loop and fastening it to the appropriate notch. Range of tightening should not constrict circulation.

    • 3

Tighten the calf straps in the same manner as ankle straps to a secure and comfortable fit. If calves start to tingle, then the straps are too tight. Loosen accordingly to ensure proper blood circulation.

    • 4

Walk around wearing the climbing gaffs to ensure appropriate comfort and fit. Loose gaffs will shift around the ankles or calf straps will slide down the leg. Adjust the straps if this occurs.
