How to Climb a Flagpole

It takes a lot of upper-body strength to climb a flagpole. If you want to succeed in climbing a flagpole, practice climbing a shorter pole first. It can increase your muscle strength and energy. When you climb, you don't want to hang from your arms. You want to engage the biceps and triceps muscles to support the strength of your body. Use the bridge of your feet and the back of your calves to squeeze and grip against the pole. Never use your feet directly.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in front of the pole with your leading hand held high on the flagpole or on the rope that is attached to the flagpole. Press your left leg against the pole. Press the top part of your foot and the side of your knee against the pole to grip the pole. Bring your second hand just below your first hand and use the muscles in your arms to grip the pole very tightly.

    • 2

Push off the ground, bringing your calves and heels to rest around the far side and squeeze the pole between your legs. Raise both of your hands just above your head, keeping your elbows bent, and push with your legs and pull with your arms. Continue climbing up the pole.

    • 3

Lift your hands high on the pole and use your arms to pull your body up. Then, use your legs to push your body upward while you bend your knees towards your chest. Continue to alternate between these two movements until you get to the top of the pole. The more you bend your knees into your chest, the more you can move your body up the pole. Keep your body close to the pole as you move upward.
