Instructions

Wear a body belt, with a safety strap hooked to it. If this is your first time, practice using this equipment before getting on a pole. If you are right handed you must carry your safety strap in the left D-ring. If you are right handed, same ring goes on the right. Fix the keeper so that the strap will not twist.

Fix your safety strap to the right length while standing near the telephone pole. Put on a hardhat and leather gloves.

    • 3

Position the gaffs into the pole. Get on the telephone pole with your feet apart a few inches and apply safety strap around the pole above the harness. If you are right handed, your right foot will be up first.

    • 4

Climb up the pole. When climbing, lift the safety strap, pushing down on the gaff with your highest foot. Continue to interchange this method. It is always best to keep your eyes up on where you are going instead of your feet. This may mess up your climb. Keep comfortable while climbing. Take short steps while balancing with hands and arms.

Climb down the pole. When you look down, do not lean to look down the sides of your body. Instead look straight down through your legs to get your footing. Slide strap down as you go. You will then use your body weight to put the gaff into the pole. When you are very close to the ground, undo the belt to leave the pole.
