Set up your board according to official standards; the bull's-eye must be 5 feet 8 inches from the floor. The mount for the dart board is usually found on the back-center of the board. Place your nail or stud at this height to ensure the bull's-eye will be at this height.

Mark the throwing line with a strip of tape. This line is also known as the "toe-line" or "oche." It marks the minimal throwing distance; which is 7 feet 9 1/4-inches from the bull's-eye.

3
Explain the rules before starting a game. There are various dart games and stipulations, such as "X01" and "Shanghai Rules." Basic rules for two players or teams state that each player -- or a member from each team -- will throw a dart to determine the throwing order. The dart that lands closest to the bull's-eye determines who goes first. Each player is allowed nine warm-up throws before the game.
-
4
Take turns throwing the darts. Each turn consists of throwing three darts. Every throw must be thrown behind the toe-line; a player may lean over the toe-line as far as they like. The most common rule that must be addressed before starting a game is whether darts count if they fall off the board. The usual rule states that the dart counts if it is on the board for longer than five seconds.

5
Add up the score. The board is divided into four sections and seven rings, creating 20 separate wedges. The bull's-eye is made up of the two inner rings; the outer ring is worth 25 points and the inner ring is worth 50 points. The point value for each ring is written on the ring above it. Wide rings count a single point, narrow rings are worth double points and the fourth ring is triple points.
-
6
Write down your score before removing your darts. Throws that don't count are darts that fell from the board, darts that bounce off the board and darts that are stuck to other darts. Darts that miss the board -- or are dropped before being thrown -- can be rethrown.
