How to Tie Stainless Steel Knots

Stainless steel wire is commonly used to make rigs for fishing in open saltwater. The strength and durability of stainless steel is an advantage when angling for large toothy fish that can easily bite through monofilament and even braided fishing lines. A knot used to tie small diameter stainless steel wire involves twisting the wire to secure it around the eye of a fish hook.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a length of small diameter stainless steel wire in one hand and a fishing hook in the other. Choose a hook in a size based on fish species and personal preference.

    • 2

Feed one end of the stainless steel wire through the eye of the hook so that 6 to 8 inches of the wire extends beyond the eye.

    • 3

Bend the wire slightly around the hook eye so that the free end of the wire is parallel to the main length of wire. Avoid the formation of a crease in the wire at the hook eye.

    • 4

Cross the shorter end of the wire extending through the hook eye over the main length of wire. Grip both wires between the thumb and index finger of one hand.

    • 5

Twist the wires around each other six times. Hold the hook and both wires above the hook eye to help form a loop above the hook eye and to form the twists.

    • 6

Hold the main length of the stainless steel wire with one hand. Turn the short length of wire out from the main wire at a right angle.

    • 7

Wrap the short length of wire around the main wire length five to six turns to lock the twists below in place.

    • 8

Bend the short length of wire to form a short handle. Turn the wire handle in a circular motion to break the wire off cleanly against the main length of stainless steel wire.
