The Advantages of a Casting Vs. a Spinning Rod & Reel

Anglers have the choice of utilizing a casting or spinning reel setup for most fishing situations. A casting reel requires regular practice to master, but offers an angler the chance to fine tune their bait approach. Its accuracy and sensitivity increases an angler's ability to catch and land fish.

  1. Accuracy

    • Casting reels offer greater casting accuracy than spinning reels due to allowing more control over the line speed. Your thumb placement on the line spool allows you to control the line speed and stop the line at any time. A spinning reel lacks the control of line speed once the cast is started and means you are only able to abruptly stop the line by closing the bail.

    Line Release

    • The horizontal spool on a casting reel allows the line to smoothly roll off for longer casts. Spinning reels feature a vertical spool where the line has to clear the top of the spool, causing unnecessary drag. Float stoppers or knots within the spool line pose no problem for a casting reel, but can catch the line on a spinning reel as it slides across the vertical spool.

    Choices

    • Casting reels come in a variety of models specifically designed for different fishing techniques and situations including deep see fishing, flipping, finesse casting and trolling. The differences include size, line weight capability, drag settings and gear ratio. Spinning reels don’t offer much in the way of choice except for size as they are usually designed to be a general purpose reel. Anglers may have several different casting reels for the same species that offer different casting and handling characteristics.

    Drag

    • Casting reels feature a magnetic or star drag system that allows for fine tuning your drag setting. The sensitivity surpasses that of conventional drag systems of spinning reels. Casting reels have the added benefit of utilizing your thumb to help control the drag on the line. The angler can customize the drag setting with pressure from their thumb according to the size of fish on the line.
