1
Choose a spinning reel, which hangs below the rod handle and has a metal bale around the spool, with which to pair the rod. When the reel is attached, it should feel comfortable and well-balanced in your hand.

2
Add 2- to 10-lb. fishing line to the rod and reel. Use lighter line when targeting small fish species such as sunfish; heavier line is appropriate when targeting bigger species such as walleyes. Insert the line through the tip of the fishing rod; then thread it through each line guide until you reach the reel. Open the bale of the reel and wrap the fishing line around the reel spool two times. Knot the line to secure it to the reel. Turn the reel handle clockwise to reel line onto the reel. Continue until the line is 1/8 inch below the rim of the spool. Cut the line a foot or two beyond the tip of the fishing rod.

3
Attach a plain hook, lure or snap swivel to the end of the fishing line using a Palomar knot.
