How to Replace an Abu Garcia 5600AB Thumb Switch

Intended for trolling and short range casts, bait casting reels have a nasty tendency to tangle the line around the reel spool during casting -- happening when the spool turns faster than the line can unspool from the reel. Equipped with a spool brake, the Abu-Garcia 5600AB (anti-backlash) bait casting reel is designed with a thumb switch that controls the speed of the reel spool. If the switch malfunctions it can easily be replaced in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove both side covers from the reel with a set of precision screwdrivers. Wiggle the cover plates from the reel with your fingers.

    • 2

Remove the nuts on both sides of the spindle bolt with a wrench. Use a pair of needle-nose or circlip pliers to remove the retaining rings on both ends of the spindle. Pull the spindle from the reel with your fingers.

    • 3

Push the thumb-switch bar up with your finger until it is at a 70-degree angle to the reel foot -- the base of the reel that holds the rod to the handle of the pole. Wiggle the thumb-switch bar assembly from the reel.

    • 4

Install the new thumb-switch bar assembly in the same orientation as the one which was removed. Install the spindle on the reel and replace the retaining rings on the ends of the spindle.

Apply thread sealer to the threads on the spindle bolt and screw the nuts onto the spindle bolts with your fingers. Tighten the nuts with the wrench. Place the side covers on the reel. Coat the threads of the cover screws with thread sealer and tighten the screws in place with a screwdriver.
