How to Balance a Walleye Jigging Rod

Jig fishing for walleyes often requires a lot of monotonous vertical motions. After a long day, continuously making these motions can make your arms tired. Balancing your walleye rod, so it rests horizontally on a finger near where you hold the rod, will help reduce arm fatigue. It also improves the rod's sensitivity and helps you detect bites. Doing so takes only a small investment of time and money, but it could pay off in a big way with less fatigue and more fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a replacement rod butt cap at a tackle store large enough to slide over the handle of your fishing rod. It should stretch over the handle and attach tightly.

    • 2

Place quarters into the butt cap and slide the butt cap over the end of the rod handle.

    • 3

Place a finger on the rod handle between the fishing reel attachment point and the top end of the handle. Do this with the reel attached to the rod.

    • 4

Check for balance. You want the rod to balance horizontally on one finger at a point between the reel and the top of the handle.

    • 5

Add more quarters to the butt cap if the tip of the rod hangs below the butt of the rod.

    • 6

Remove quarters if the butt hangs below the rod tip.
