How to Roast Fire Sticks Backwards

Fire Sticks are a fast-acting fire starter and tinder. These rectangular sticks are made out of compressed wood chips and paraffin wax and burn very fast and very hot, making them a solid option for starting a fire in wet, cold or windy conditions. Fire Sticks are made to be easy to light and are burnable from any angle. There are no hard-and-fast rules for the use of Fire Sticks or the direction in which they need to be burned or "roasted." However, there are some methods of using the sticks that maximize the flame and heat potential.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out a small fire pit. Make sure it is as dry as possible. Take three Fire Sticks out of the package and set them up against each other in a cone shape, like a tepee. It does not matter which side of the sticks is up.

Fire Sticks burn regardless of wet or windy weather, making them a better choice than lighters or matches. You can burn the stick from either end you wish; it makes no difference with these fire starters.

    • 2

Take out a fourth Fire Stick. With the blade of the multi tool or knife, whittle shavings off the Fire Stick and spread around the base of the tepee.

    • 3

Light the Fire Stick shavings at the base -- this will spark up and "roast" the sticks. The flames should start burning the Fire Sticks, starting from the bottom end of the sticks (the part touching the ground). Again, either end works. Backward, forward or upside down -- it does not matter with Fire Sticks.

After the flames take hold of the Fire Sticks, you can add larger firewood to the flames.
