How to Go Hiking With a Gitzo Tripod

Gitzo tripods are used to mount sophisticated and heavy cameras and lenses so steady and solid photos may be taken. Because many hikers tend to be amateur wildlife and landscape photographers, hiking with this camera gear is a part of their hiking experience. Care needs to be taken to hike with these tripods properly, to avoid poking and hurting yourself or others while on the trail. There are a couple of time tested transport methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the tripod down to its folded and enclosed position. Open any quick release side straps on the backpack. These typically are black plastic pieces with 1-inch nylon webbing threaded into them.

    • 2

Slide the Gitzo tripod down the side of the pack, into the small pockets or sleeves at the bottom of the pack. Marry the female and male ends of the side quick-clips so they wrap around the tripod body, securing it to the pack and away from your head and the path of other hikers.

    • 3

Pull out on any bungee webbing or cords on the front of your backpack. Push the Gitzo Tripod down into the webbing so it is between the cords and the pack. Let go of the cords so they are snug against the tripod and pack.

    • 4

Clip one carabiner -- a hinged D-clip -- around the neck of the tripod, then through the daisy chain webbing on the pack. The daisy chain webbing are loops stitched into the pack where clips attach to secure objects to the outside of the pack. Clip a second carabiner around another leg of the tripod and through another loop on the daisy chain.

Hike with the tripod on the backpack and push it to one side or the other as it shifts with gravity and movement.
