1
Research the trail you are going to hike. Pay careful attention to the difficulty of the trail and any special equipment that may be needed. Also, take note of any locations along the way that offer campsites, food and water, or emergency services. These may come in handy for any unexpected needs during the trip.
-
2
Train your body for the hike. Begin with small amounts of exercise, slowly increasing the length of time you spend every day. Work your body up to an hour of exercise a day over the course of one or two weeks. Listen to your body and don't exceed your limits. It's better to advance slowly in your exercise program than to jump ahead and possibly injure yourself.
-
3
Pack only the supplies that are necessary, but pack everything that you will need. You will be responsible for carrying all of your supplies along the trek. Choose items that are practical and also lightweight, such as a tent that is designed for portability. Be sure to include any food you will need along the trail. Packing dehydrated food will help reduce the total weight of your pack. Some locations may allow you to ship supplies ahead to the trail, reducing the total amount of supplies you must carry at once.
-
4
Tell others about your hike and detail the trail you will be taking. If you encounter any problems along the trail such as becoming injured or lost, others may be able to use the information you provided them to locate you. Also, consider bringing a friend who can help if any problems occur.
-
5
Travel carefully while on your hike. Don't take any unnecessary risks while on your hike. Monitor your pace and do not strain yourself. Most importantly, enjoy your hike and use the time to relax your body and mind.
