How to Make a Backpack Tent

Few things are so important as weight when you're backpacking in the wilderness. The lighter your gear, the more provisions and supplies you will be able to carry. Less weight also means less fatigue at the end of the day. Making your own backpacking tent is one easy way to reduce the amount of weight that you carry. Because of its simple design, materials are easily available.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a rope between two trees, making sure that the rope is perpendicular to the wind. The rope should be as tight as possible.

    • 2

Drape the tarp evenly over the rope.

    • 3

Stake the four corners of the tarp to the ground, stretching it taut in the process.

    • 4

Place your ground sheet inside the tent where you plan on placing your sleeping bag.

    • 5

Tighten the rope to eliminate any sag that may have occurred as you were constructing the tent.
