How to Make a Tarp Backpack

Tarps are often used for a shelter by backpacking and hiking enthusiasts, especially by those who take long treks into the backcountry. A tarp can also double as a backpack. Using a tarp as both a shelter and a backpack is an ultra-light style of backpacking; the less weight carried equals more comfort during long hikes. Several methods for using a tarp as a backpack are available. Perhaps the most simple form is the horseshoe pack, otherwise known as a hobo roll.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the tarp flat on the ground. This is best done on a concrete surface to avoid getting dirt in the roll.

    • 2

Line the items you'll be carrying along one edge of the tarp, centered in the middle. Pad sharp-edged items with clothing.

    • 3

Fold both sides of the tarp -- those to the left and right of your items -- over your items. Lay a rope across the folded tarp in the middle, parallel to your line of items. Leave an even amount of rope hanging on both sides.

    • 4

Roll up the tarp tightly, beginning at the edge where your items are lined. Tightly lash the roll with rope on both ends and in the middle.

    • 5

Tie together the ends of the rope that are hanging on both sides. Wear the pack with the rope diagonally across your body, with the pack on your back.
