How to Repair Swiss Gear Walking Sticks

Swiss Gear Walking Poles, also referred to as sticks, have two telescoping pole blanks adjusted via a barrel clamp. The poles weigh in around 15 ounces for the set and are sold in large box retail stores. The poles extend to a length of 56 inches from a compressed length of 26 inches. Because the poles use barrel adjusters, the springs tend to wear out and the barrels get stuck from use and the elements.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle nose pliers
  • Replacement pole springs (available at outdoor outfitters)
  • Dry graphite lubricant
  • Metal file

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the barrel adjusters on both rods all the way counterclockwise and then pull the rod blanks apart to expose the inner springs. Examine the springs to see if they are stretched or bent. Springs should look similar to a "slinky" and be compressed. If the springs show gaps between the wires or bends, replace the springs.

    • 2

Turn the pole screws clockwise to tighten, using the tips of the needle nose pliers before you insert the new springs. Once the springs are in place, push the rod blanks back together until the gasket keeps the rod blanks from separating.

    • 3

Squirt dry graphite lubricant into the barrel adjusters and around the poles at the barrels. Push the rod blanks up and down to work the lubricant under the barrel adjusters.

    • 4

Compress the sticks and turn the barrels clockwise to lock the poles into position.

    • 5

Inspect the tips and file down any spurs or jagged edges to prevent them from getting stuck in soft ground.
