Helmets for Horseback Riding
-
ASTM/SEI Certified
-
ASTM and SEI certify a wide range of helmets and brands of helmet. Troxel is the only brand whose entire line of helmets is ASTM/SEI-certified. These helmets vary in size and appearance but may be worn in any competition and are considered safe for recreational riding as well. Other brands of ASTM/SEI-certified helmets are Charles Owen, IRH, GPA, Tipperary and Aegis.
English Helmets
-
English riding helmets are helmets whose size, shape and color conform to trends and standards of English riding competitions. Traditionally, English helmets are covered in black, navy blue or brown velvet and feature a short visor. In order to meet ASTM/SEI standards, English riding helmets must have a chin strap. Popular brands of English riding helmets for show are GPA, Troxel and Charles Owen.
Western Helmets
-
Western helmets are similar to English helmets but are generally finished in leather rather than velvet. Western helmets typically feature visors and chin straps. Certain models of western helmet are shaped to resemble a cowboy hat. Troxel makes several models of western helmets, all of which are ASTM/SEI-certified and therefore suitable for pleasure or for show.
Skull Caps
-
Skull cap riding helmets are lightweight helmets without visors. Originally worn by jockeys, skull caps fit similarly to bicycle helmets. They have chin straps and air vents, making them cooler than many show helmets. Not all skull caps are ASTM/SEI-certified. Popular brands include Charles Owen, Tipperary and Aegis.
Hunt Caps
-
Hunt caps are helmets manufactured for competition but are not ASTM/SEI-certified. Because hunt caps are designed as items of apparel rather than as protective headgear, many competitive events have banned them. Hunt caps fit closer to the rider’s head and come with detachable chin straps. Popular brands of hunt cap are IRH and Charles Owen.
