How to Make Lasso Traps

A lasso is generally associated with cowboy's and handling and harnessing cattle. However, the same concept of a lasso -- the animal struggling simply tightens the loop around it -- can be used with trapping. A single piece of string or cord is all that is needed to create the trap for small game and is a good technique to have in your wilderness survival arsenal.

      Locate where on the rope you would like the knot to be. This will determine how large the loop is. Create the loop to be as big or as small as your game requires.

      Tie a loose overhand knot where you wish the bottom of the loop to be. Loop the rope and feed the end back through the created loop and pull it gently. This is also called a simple knot.

      Take the remaining piece of rope, which will become the loop, in your dominant hand and the loose overhand knot in your less dominant hand.

      Pinch the loop together loosely with your thumb resting on where the rope fed through the original loop. Take the end of the long piece of rope to become the loop and feed it through the opening that happens when the knot is pinched, through the loop.

      Place one hand on the piece of rope at the beginning of the loop and the top of the rope still hanging loose. This will tighten the knot, securing the loop.
