How to Shorten a Rope

Ropes serve a multitude of uses when it comes to outdoor activities. They've been a popular tool for climbing, tying objects together and other purposes. There are times when you may be faced with excess rope, whether for a recreational activity or an outdoor emergency, and wish to shorten it. The obvious solution would be to cut the rope at either end using a pair of scissors, but there may be times that you don't have scissors handy. You can still shorten your rope by creating a "daisy chain," a method that is largely tangle-free and storage-friendly.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold your rope in half. Make sure that each side of the folded rope is equal in length to the other.

    • 2

Grab the folded end of the rope. Create a loop and pull the folded end of the rope through that loop.

    • 3

Reach through the loop you just created with one hand and grab the rope. Let the part of the rope that is in between the loop and the point you are grabbing sink through the loop.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 with each subsequent loop that is created until you have reached the end of the rope.

    • 5

When you have reached the end of the rope, tie a regular overhand knot. You have successfully shortened your rope, as well as made it easier to manage and store.
