How to Shorten a Rope Without Cutting
Rope is a valuable resource, especially if you are camping or hiking. Some situations call for a short rope, but cutting your only rope may cost you later. The best option is to shorten your rope without cutting it. A sheepshank knot is designed to do just that, and if you need a longer rope later, you simply untie the knot. The sheepshank had much application in the days of sailing vessels, in times before synthetic ropes came into use.

Tying a Sheepshank
-
1
Lay the rope flat and make three loops in the rope. These loops should be close together and pointing up. The bigger the loops, the more you will shorten the rope.
-
2
Reach through the loop on the right and grab the right side of the center loop with your right hand. Keep holding the center loop with your right hand while you perform the next step.
-
3
Reach through the loop on the left and grab the left side of the center loop with your left hand.
-
4
Pull both sides of the center loop through the two side loops simultaneously. Finish the knot by pulling the two sides of the center loop in opposite directions until it is tight.
