1
Dust the bird mount gently, using a feather duster. Because taxidermy birds are quite fragile, avoid using a lot of pressure when dusting the bird.
-
2
Remove any screws from the mount or mounting box that keep the bird in place. Gently hold the bird upright while doing this so it doesn't fall over. Once you've removed the screws, lift the bird out from its mounting.
-
3
Remove paper liner from the mounting box or mounting if it has water damage or is moldy. Most paper can be pulled off from the mounting box by hand, and excess residue can be removed using Goo Gone and a scraper.
-
4
Spray the box with a wood cleaner and scrub the inside and outside with a rag. Be sure to remove any mold that may have accumulated in the box as this can damage the taxidermy bird.
-
5
Hold the bottle of trophy cleaner approximately five inches from the bird, then spray the cleaner onto the bird until it is lightly dampened. Allow the trophy cleaner to set on the bird for the time recommended by the instructions, then gently wipe the cleaner off using a soft rag.
-
6
Coat the bird in the preventive sheen shield included in the trophy cleaning kit. This will help reduce yellowing and restore sheen while helping to prevent future damage to the bird.
-
7
Reattach the bird to the mounting box. Replace the mounting box completely if it is damaged beyond repair or shows signs of warping or deep mold. Store the cleaned and restored bird mount in a dry area with a consistently neutral temperature. Do not place your bird mount in direct sunlight or above a fireplace as this can cause discoloration and bleaching.
