How to Use Bird Launchers

Bird launchers are utilized in the training of hunting dogs. Live birds are used, although the birds are not harmed in the process. If tame birds are employed, the trainer can use them repeatedly. Game birds such as pigeons, doves or quail are perfect for the bird launcher. The bird launcher teaches dogs to flush birds from the undergrowth and gets them accustomed to the sound of birds in flight. The dog must learn to freeze and point when it discovers birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the launcher on a level piece of ground and remove the safety pin.

    • 2

Load the bird into the bird launcher from the top or the side, depending on your model. Open the cradle doors and hold the bird gently, taking care to hold down the wings to prevent injury. Use a launcher appropriate for the size of game bird you will be using.

    • 3

Close the doors on the launcher cradle. Work slowly and quietly so as not to spook the bird. Engage the release lever on the side of the bird launcher.

    • 4

Set up several launchers at once so that your dog becomes accustomed to the sound of a flock of birds. Sound the beeper using the remote control so that your dog comes to associate the sound with the release of birds, then release the bird into the air using the remote.
