How to Attach a Paracord to a Kabar

The KA-BAR bowie knife gained fame as the choice of the United States Marines during World War II. Today, KA-BAR offers a wide range of knives that meed the needs of military personnel, outdoorsmen and hunters. A paracord lanyard provides a wrist loop that prevents the knife from dropping if it slips out of your hand. Thread a piece of paracord through the lanyard hole on your KA-BAR knife and create an adjustable lanyard for increased safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a two-foot long piece of cord, then hold the flame from a lighter to one loose end until the end melts, then press the end against the blade of the knife. This sear keeps the cord from coming undone. Do the same for the opposite end of the cord.

    • 2

Thread the cord through the lanyard hole on the knife and pull one-third of the cord through the hole.

    • 3

Fold the long end of cord back, creating a loop in the process, so that the folded section extends approximately two-thirds as far from the knife handle as the short end of cord does.

    • 4

Pinch the long section of cord at the point where it bends down to touch itself, gripping both parts of the long end, as well as the short end of cord aligned with this point.

    • 5

Wrap the long end of cord behind the three cords you are pinching, creating a tight loop around the three cord sections.

    • 6

Repeat the wrap until you have created a wrapped section as long as you desire. Any number of wraps over five will provide a strong knot.

    • 7

Pass the loose end of the wrapping through the loop formed by the bent long end of the cord.

    • 8

Hold the knife with the pinkie and ring fingers of one hand and the two loose ends in your other hand, then press up on the wraps with your thumb and index fingers of the hand holding the knife. This tightens the wraps up against the loop, and creates a wrist loop between the bottom of the wraps and the knife.

    • 9

Hold onto the short loose end and pull down on the wraps to shrink the wrist loop to size.
