Instructions for a Browning Trombone

The trombone, manufactured by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium, but designed by, and licensed to, Browning, is a .22 caliber pump action rifle. Made from 1922 to 1974, this 10-round, 24 inch barreled rifle was a favorite of tin can plinkers and small game hunters. Use of this relatively simple and robust rifle is straightforward with only a few steps to its proper operation.

      Locate the loading bay, located just ahead of the pump loading handle, on the underside of the rifle.

      Push the button located just ahead of the loading bay to open the loading port. The pump handle should be forward at this time.

      Load 15 short, 12 long, or 11 long rifle .22 caliber cartridges into the tubular magazine by loading them into the loading bay, rim first, backward toward the trigger. Release the button when full to close the loading bay.

      Pull the pump action loading handle toward the trigger and receiver to load. One pull toward the trigger followed by a push all the way forward loads one round into the chamber, ready to be fired.

      Pull the trigger to fire the round or push the safety button (located to the rear top of the trigger guard on the left hand side) in from the left to activate the safety and in from the right to deactivate the safety.
