1
Unload the weapon completely. Remove the magazine. Pull the slide to the rear. Visually inspect the chamber to ensure that no live ammunition is present.
-
2
Pull the slide back to the rear fully and engage the slide stop, exposing the slide retainer pin located at the rear of the weapon frame. Punch out the retainer pin using a 1/8 inch pin punch and hammer.
-
3
Pull the slide rear up and simultaneously push the slide forward and off of the weapon's frame. The guide rod and spring will typically slide out as you remove the slide from the frame. If the spring/rod doesn't slide out on its own, simply pull it out from under the barrel and set it aside.
-
4
Flip the slide upside down. Pull out on the firing pin retainer located at the rear of the slide and remove it. Hold the slide at a downward angle and slide the firing pin, firing pin spring and the two spring bushings out from the groove in the slide. Note the position of the bushings prior to removal so that you don't have difficulty reassembling the parts.
-
5
Dip a 9 mm barrel brush into gun cleaning solution. Insert the brush into the barrel and scrub in and out vigorously. Reapply cleaning solution as needed until you break up powder residue and corrosion and any copper fouling that may be present.
-
6
Scrub the rear of the barrel area (feed ramp) using a nylon bristle brush until powder residue is no longer visible. Clean under the barrel in the spring/rod hole using a cotton swab and solvent. Run a dry swab into the hole after cleaning to remove excess solvent.
-
7
Attach a cleaning patch to a cleaning rod jag. Run the dry patch in and out of the barrel until all cleaning residue is removed. Apply a drop of gun oil to a fresh cleaning patch. Run the patch in and out of the barrel once. This will lightly lubricate the barrel and help keep the weapon from corroding.
-
8
Apply gun cleaning solution to a nylon bristle brush. Brush the entire chamber area on the slide -- including the breech-face, ejection-port and extractor -- free of powder residue and corrosion. Wipe the cleaning residue off the entire chamber area using a soft cloth.
-
9
Clean out the firing pin groove using a cleaning patch and solvent, or a cotton swab and solvent, until the entire groove is free of powder residue. Clean the solvent off using a dry patch. Clean powder residue off the firing pin using a patch and solvent. Dry off the firing pin.
-
10
Scrub the rails on both the slide and the frame using a nylon bristle brush and cleaning solvent until no powder residue is visible. Wipe the rails clean with a soft cloth. Apply a drop of gun oil to a cleaning patch. Lightly lubricate the rails on the slide and frame. Reassemble the weapon by reversing Steps 1 through 4.
