Field Stripping The Model 700
-
1
Make sure the rifle is unloaded and engage the safety.
-
2
Rotate the bolt handle to unlock the bolt. Pull the bolt all the way back until it stops. Push the bolt release inside the trigger guard, and slide the bolt the rest of the way out of the receiver.
-
3
Turn the rifle over, and remove the three stock screws. Two are located on either side of the trigger guard, and one is at the front end of the magazine floor plate. Separate the stock from the trigger and receiver assembly.
Installing The Jewell Trigger
-
4
Tap out the two taper pins securing the factory trigger assembly to the receiver using a pin punch and a small hammer. Drive the pins from the right side of the trigger assembly out the left side. Remove the rear pin first to release the bolt stop and spring; then remove the forward pin. Discard the factory sear and sear spring.
-
5
Insert the Jewell trigger assembly into the receiver, and line up the holes for the two pins.
-
6
Tap in the forward taper pin securing the trigger assembly to the receiver using a pin punch and a small hammer. Drive the pin from the left side of the trigger assembly out the right side of the receiver.
-
7
Hook the hooked end of the bolt stop spring into the trigger assembly slot in the receiver, just behind the trigger assembly. Position the long retaining leg of the spring over the bolt stop recess, and align the loop in the spring with the rear trigger housing taper pin hole.
-
8
Slide the bolt stop into its recess and underneath the leg of the bolt stop spring. Start the rear trigger housing taper pin by hand, guiding it through the hole in the bolt stop and the loop in the bolt stop spring.
-
9
Make sure the pin lines up with the trigger housing mounting holes in the receiver. With a pin punch and small hammer, drive the pin the rest of the way from the left side of the trigger assembly out the right side of the receiver. Verify that the spring-loading of the bolt stop allows it to move freely and returns it to proper position.
-
10
Mate the receiver and trigger assembly with the stock to check for proper fit. If binding occurs, file away a small portion of the wood inside the stock to accommodate the enlarged Jewell trigger spindle on the right side of the trigger assembly.
-
11
Install the receiver and trigger assembly in the stock. Screw in the three stock mounting screws, securing the magazine floor plate as well.
-
12
Start the bolt assembly into the receiver, push the bolt release inside the trigger guard, and push the bolt all the way forward.
-
13
Perform a functional check of the bolt action, receiver and safety. Adjust the Jewell trigger per personal preferences for trigger action.
