How to Do Forward Crossovers in Ice Skating

The forward crossover is a skill beginners need to learn when they start ice skating. Used to turn a corner on the ice, the crossover requires you to change your foot position as you build forward momentum in preparation for jumps, spins and footwork.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by standing with both feet together. Extend your right hand straight forward and your left hand straight behind your body. This position makes you twist your trunk, which in turn will twist your feet.

    • 2

Crouch down as if you're going to sit in a chair, but not so far that you can't maintain your balance.

    • 3

Put your weight on your left foot and push off with your right foot. Lean slightly in toward the center of the rink.

    • 4

Cross your right foot over the front of your left foot, putting your weight on your right foot once it touches the ice.

    • 5

Bring your left foot even with your right foot, returning it to it's original position. This completes the forward crossover step.
