How to Do the Three-Turn Exercise for Ice Skating

The three turn on ice is similar to a three-point turn in driving. It's a way for a skater to change direction without coming to a full stop. The three turn is used to move from forward to back and the other way around, in a fluid motion while ice skating.

Instructions

    • 1

Move forward on the ice using one foot. Skate in a semicircle.

    • 2

Rock up on the front of the blade when you reach the end of your semicircle and immediately switch edges to move backward. Rocking forward on your blade takes your weight from it, making it easier for you to change edges and move backward.

    • 3

Complete another semicircle in the opposite direction to finish the three turn.

    • 4

Perfect the technique by making sure both of the semi circles are similar in shape and size. The pattern on the ice should look like a "3," hence the name of the turn.

    • 5

Inspect the ice after you're done skating the turn to see if you've created clean semi circles or if you've left scratches on the ice. Scratches are the result of not rocking forward enough to lessen your weight off of the blade.
