How to Dress a Child for Ice Skating

Indoors or out, a young ice skater needs to be dressed mindfully. A warm, comfortable child will skate longer and whine less.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress your child in comfortable long pants (think baggy jeans or knit pants). Temperatures in an indoor rink will typically be between 50 to 60 degrees. Layers are key whether you are skating inside or out.

    • 2

On top, choose long sleeves layered with a jacket that can be removed if necessary. Most ice rinks have lockers available.

    • 3

Glove or mittens are critical, especially for beginners, who may fall frequently. (Nothing slows down learning like cold hands.) The glove style is less important than the fit. As long as it stays on her hands, it will suffice.

    • 4

If you will be renting skates, bring an extra pair of socks (one thick, one thin) in case you need to double up to make the skates fit well.

    • 5

Some rinks suggest that kids wear helmets and knee/elbow/wrist pads. When in doubt, contact the rink beforehand.

    • 6

When selecting a skate, remember that the heel should be snug against the back of the skate. There should be room for your child to slightly wiggle his toes.

    • 7

If you child is skating outdoors, he may also need a weatherproof jacket, neck warmer, hat, sunscreen and lip balm.
