How to Clean Ice Skates

If ice skates are not cleaned and maintained, they will become ruined over time. Cleaning the skates only takes a few minutes and needs to be performed on a periodic basis. Properly cared for skates work better and maintain their consistency when worn.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the skates down with a clean and dry cloth after use. Pay extra attention to the areas surrounding the blade. A skate chamois can be used to clean the blades of ice skates and dry them.

    • 2

Rub off any dirt that has built up on the skates. Avoid putting any cleaning products near the blades since it can cause slippage.

    • 3

Use shoe polish on the ice skates. The polish should match the color of the skates and be applied in a thin coat. Let the polish dry completely before further cleaning and protecting the skates.

    • 4

Place a wax sealant on the leather of the ice skates. This protects the leather while keeping it soft. Sno-Seal is a popular product used among ice skaters.

    • 5

Get the skate blades sharpened if necessary. Contact your local sports retailer to see about sharpening skates or sending them off to be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning can be effective at removing difficult stains and foul smells.
