How to Get a Seadoo License

Sea-Doo manufactures personal watercrafts and boats. Many states require a license to operate these vehicles on the water, others only require that the Sea-Doo is registered. To become licensed to operate the Sea-Doo or any other watercraft, you often need to complete an approved safety course. State-approved courses can be taken online, watched on video or taken in a classroom setting and may take several hours, if not several days to complete.

      Go to the department of motor vehicles, the state department or office that handles the registration of cars. Many states offer licenses to operate road and water vehicles in the same office. However, some states, such as Pennsylvania, issue licenses for watercrafts through the Fish and Boat Commission or department of recreation. If you are unsure how your state handles Sea-Doo licensing, contact the department of motor vehicles and it can refer you to the correct office.

      Inquire about approved boating safety education courses and licensing requirements to to see what is required in your state or if you just need to complete registration paperwork for the Sea-Doo watercraft.

      Complete the approved boating safety education course, if necessary, to earn your boating safety certification. Most safety courses can be completed in under 27 hours online or in a classroom setting. If you complete the course successfully and pass the exam, you will receive a certificate of completion.

      Return the certificate to the department, along with proper identification documents such as your driver license, birth certificate, social security number and proof of address, and the Sea-Doo bill of sale, title and proof of insurance. Then complete the registration paperwork for the Sea-Doo if it was not purchased from a dealer. The department representative will register the Sea-Doo, which will make it legal to operate the craft. And if your state issues motorboat or jet ski licenses, you will receive a license. There is a fee for both registration and licensing; fees vary per state.
