How to Test a Sea-Doo Trigger Coil

The Sea-Doo is a personal watercraft enjoyed by thousands of people each spring and summer. The trigger coil, which is more commonly known as the ignition coil, is a coil of wire that runs between the ignition and the spark plug. The ability of the ignition coil to successfully transmit current without shorting is known as resistance. Ignition, or trigger coils, can erode over time and may not operate at their peak resistance efficiency.

      Determine the resistance range for your specific year and model Sea-Doo. This range will vary from model to model. Consult the owner's manual to locate the specific resistance range for your Sea-Doo. Many Sea-Doo models, however, have an ignition coil resistance range of .85 to 1.16 Ohms for the primary coil winding and 9.5 to 13.5 K-Ohms for the secondary.

      Remove the engine panel and access the ignition coil. Loosen one end of the coil from the ignition and the other end from the spark plug.

      Turn the digital multimeter on and set it to resistance setting at a range that falls between .85 to 1.16 Ohms for the primary winding, 9.5 to 13.5 K-Ohms for the secondary winding or the proper resistance range designated in your Sea-Doo owner's manual.

      Place the positive meter lead to the positive end of the coil and the negative meter lead to the negative end of the coil's primary winding. Do the same with the secondary coil winding. If the resistance does not fall between the ranges for your model Sea-Doo the ignition coil, or trigger coil, should be replaced with a new one.
