How to Get a Rope Out of the Intake on a XL800 WaveRunner

Personal watercraft like the Yamaha Wave Runner XL800 have revolutionized the way people spend time on lakes and oceans by allowing them to navigate the water in a way previously reserved for boats. Wave Runners are propelled by a strong stream of water ejected out the back of the craft through a steering nozzle. It is possible for a variety of different objects and materials to be sucked into the craft's intake due to the way the Wave Runner is designed. Fortunately, Yamaha provides copious amounts of support documentation that provide guidance on how to remove items, like rope, from the Wave Runner XL800 intake.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the red engine shut-off switch located on the water craft's left handlebar immediately to prevent the rope and other debris from overheating and possibly seizing the engine.

    • 2

Remove the shut-off clip from the engine shut-off switch on the left handle bar. This will prevent the watercraft from starting accidentally and potentially harming the engine or any people nearby.

    • 3

Remove the Wave Runner from the water and place it on a large cloth to protect it from scratches and abrasions.

    • 4

Support the craft using the stand so it is resting on its left side. Use care when positioning the watercraft so the handlebars are not bent or damaged.

    • 5

Locate the intake, which is at the bottom of the craft near the steering nozzle. Pull on the visible parts of the rope to remove it. Stop pulling if the rope is difficult to remove and take the watercraft to a local Yamaha dealer for repair. You can damage the engine and drive shaft if you pull too hard.
