How to Install Kayak Stabilizers

Stabilizers for kayaks serve the same purpose as the outriggers on canoes. You mount the stabilizer on brackets that project on one or both sides of the kayak to offer additional flotation and prevent capsizing. Installing the stabilizers varies somewhat with the make and model of the kayak but you usually can install it with basic tools.

Locate the best position for the stabilizer. On kayaks you commnly can mount the stabilizer in front of the cockpit. Mount it as close to the center point of the kayak that will not interfere with paddling.

    • 2

Install the mounting brackets according to manufacturer's instructions. Two brackets mount on opposite sides of the kayak. For closed cockpit kayaks, you may need to drill holes in the upper deck of the kayak. For open canoes, mount the brackets on the rails of the canoe.

Place the stabilizer bar in the brackets. The bar extends to offer wider stabilization and hence more stability for the kayak. Remove the bar from the brackets when transporting the kayak.
