How to Hang a Prijon Kayak From the Rafters

Prijon Kayaks are available in touring, ocean and whitewater models. Most Prijon kayaks are made with front and aft carrying handles. These handles can be used to hang the kayak from rafters or open beams in a garage or storage area. Use the existing handles on the Prijon Kayak, along with some climbing rope and webbing, to rig a hanging system for your storage area.

Things You'll Need

  • Power drill with wood screws.
  • Two dock cleats
  • Two large wood eye-screw hooks
  • Two climbing pulleys
  • Two carabiners
  • Two 12-foot lengths of 8mm nylon cord

Instructions

    • 1

Screw the wood eye-screw hooks onto the rafter beam so they face the ground. Space them the same distance apart as the Prijon Kayak fore and aft carrying handles.

    • 2

Clip the carabiners -- metal D-clips -- into the pulleys. Do this by opening the carabiner gate and sliding the pulley hole through the open gate metal. Close the carabiner.

    • 3

Clip the carabiners with the pulleys onto the wood screws so the pulley mechanism faces the ground.

    • 4

Thread the 8mm nylon cord through the pulleys, one each. Keep an equal distance of cord between each pulley and let the excess hang to the ground.

    • 5

Screw the deck cleats into a stud or beam on the wall of the storage area, as close to the rafters as possible, but within arm's reach of the ground.

    • 6

Set the Prijon Kayak under the pulley system and tie the nylon rope to the fore and aft handles. Pull down on the nylon cord to activate the pulley and move the front or aft of the kayak up toward the ceiling. Tie the nylon cord off to the cleat to hold the hanging position.

    • 7

Pull the opposite side cord and tie off to the cleat to achieve the hanging storage position for the Prijon kayak.
