What Is the Proper Length of a Kayak Paddle?
-
Method 1
-
One way to determine kayak paddle length is to position a paddle vertically. The center point of the paddle should stand at chin height.
Method 2
-
Another way is to hold your arms in front of you, palm to palm. Have someone measure from your chest to your fingertips. Choose a paddle 3 times this measurement.
Long Vs. Short
-
For the beginner, err on the longer side. Short paddles tend to create a stroke similar to canoeing. This reduces the use of core muscles in the stroke. Instead, the shoulders and arms power the stroke. Kayak paddling, with the double paddle, should be stroked further from the kayak than when paddling a canoe. The abdominal core muscles contribute to the power by twisting with each stroke.
Short paddles, once basic paddling is mastered, allow for some faster maneuvering around bends. Save the shorter paddles for tight rivers and streams. In addition, a short paddle allows you to dig in deeper into the water to create more force. Remember to continue to engage the core muscles despite the shorter paddle.
