How to Use Toe Clips on a Bicycle

Bicycle toe clips are add-on accessories that make cycling more efficient. Toe clips are leather or nylon straps that bolt onto both sides of the pedals. They are adjustable to fit small tennis shoes or even boots. Bike owners use toe clips, usually found on moderately priced bikes, for commuting or running around town. It's important that you know how to adjust and use toe clips to prevent problems or accidents.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit on the bike seat. Balance the bike with your left foot. Place your right foot in the toe clip. Swing the pedal to its highest point.

    • 2

Release the clip on the outside of the strap. Let your toe slide all the way forward until your toe touches the front of the strap.

    • 3

Grab the loose end of the strap on the outside of your foot. Pull up on the strap until the you can feel the strap tightening around the top of your foot. The strap will lock into place by itself. Push the clip back down to lock it.

Pull your foot out. Shift your weight to the other side. Put your opposite foot on that pedal. Tighten the strap on that side.

    • 5

Hold that foot in the pedal and give the bike a short push with the foot that is on the ground. Push down on the pedal with the foot that is in the pedal. As the bike begins to roll forward, put the other foot into the toe clip and begin pedaling.

Check for tightness by pulling your feet out of the clips as you coast along slowly. If you cannot easily pull your feet out of the pedals, stop and loosen the straps slightly by popping the clip open with your thumb. When you can slide your foot in and out, push the clip closed.
