Stand directly behind the aerobic step bench. Posture is important when beginning any new exercise. Keep your head up and facing straight forward, while tucking shoulders back and down. Contract your abdominal muscles tightly in towards your spine for core strength and to help maintain correct posture.

Step with the whole sole of one foot for proper balance when stepping up on the bench. When first practicing this exercise, watch as you place each foot on the platform until you master the correct technique to prevent injuries.

Place your foot back down on the floor, staying within one shoe-length away from the bench. Repeat with the opposite foot. Repetitions are crucial when performing cardiovascular workouts.

Alternate the foot that leads the stepping motion every few minutes to reduce stress on one side of the body.

Play music to increase your enthusiasm and set the tempo while exercising. Fast tempos work best to help maintain rhythmic movement and keep things fun.
