1
Buy a mountain bike or borrow one from a friend in case you are not sure about the sport. Mountain bikes are often cheaper than racing bikes, which means there are deals out there. Look for something with a good seat, strong shock absorbers and wide tires.
-
2
Get safety equipment. A helmet and gloves are must. Also, consider getting tire repair kits, hydration systems and some extra padding if you plan to ride a lot on your own.
-
3
Look for some area trails. It shouldn't take long to find trails within an hour's driving distance of where you live. Most states have a trail system in their parks, but make sure you know the rules before heading to a park because they may restrict biking. Also, look for man-made trails through forested areas near your home.
-
4
Keep informed by joining a group even if you want to ride alone. The best way to learn about your local mountain biking community is to join a group, which will have members who know good trails, can give advice and know about good equipment deals from area merchants.
-
5
Build your endurance by cross training. Mountain biking requires a lot of muscles and skills because of the length of rides as well as the terrains. Consider swimming, running or even road cycling to help build up strength for your bigger rides.
