How to Clean a Bicycle Seat Post Tube

Routine maintenance is an essential part of bike ownership, to ensure the continued use and enjoyment of a bike. Especially true when dealing with mountain bikes or road bikes which are exposed to a wide range of outdoor elements--including water, mud, or dust--proper cleaning is essential. Instructions

    • 1

Position the bike so that it is securely held in place in an upright position. Use the kick stand of the bike for support, or in the case of mountain bikes, position the bike in a maintenance stand. Bikes without kick stands may also be supported against a sturdy object and secured with a bungee or stretch cord.

    • 2

Loosen the retaining nut on the upright tube of the bike. The seat post tube fits into the upright tube and is held in place by tightening a bolt which clamps the upright tube down on the seat post. Some bikes may feature a quick-release bolt for incremental adjustment or quick removal.

    • 3

Examine the seat post tube for excessive wear, rust, or other damage. If the seat post is loose inside the tube, and there is excessive pitting or gouging around the tube, it may be necessary to completely replace the post tube.

    • 4

Wipe any rust or debris from the post tube with a cloth. Use a small amount of multipurpose protectant/lubricant to aid in the removal of any rust or corrosion. Avoid using too much lubrication at this point. Also consider using an abrasive cleaning pad to help in the removal of any stubborn or heavier rust spots. Wipe the tube clean with a cloth to remove all rust and apply a thin coating of lubricant.

Reinstall the seat post by inserting the post tube into the bike upright tube. Adjust the height of the tube to the correct position and securely tighten the bolt or quick release.
