How to Measure Bicycle Handlebars

Setting your bike up for a successful ride requires more than the latest gear. If you want to be comfortable and efficient the next time you ride, you will need to make sure your seat and handlebar height are appropriate for your riding style and body condition. Different handlebar heights can make it easier or harder to make long rides. The best way to measure your handlebars is in relation to your seat height.

Instructions

Place your bike on its kickstand so that it will be stable while you measure. You do not need to stand over the bike to measure handlebar difference.

    • 2

Lay the straightedge across your bike, from the seat to the handlebars. It should form a slightly slanted line from one location to the other.

    • 3

Measure the difference in height, using the ruler. Record the distance from the frame to where the straightedge hits the seat, then from the frame to the handlebar straightedge contact point. Subtract the lower number from the higher one to get the difference in height.

Take your bike to a shop to have the bars adjusted according to your needs. As a rule, your bars should be between one and two inches below your seat. Professional riders and long-distance riders may opt for differences between one and four inches. In the end, the best setting is what is comfortable for you.
