How to Use Drop Nets

Drop nets, also called cast nets, are cylindrical nets with weights around the outer edges. The nets are thrown much like a flying disc, or dropped, while open. The net is then retrieved by pulling in the attached rope, along with any catch within the mesh. The net opens into a flat, round shape when thrown properly. It should open fully while still in the air.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the waders and leave the catch bucket along the shore. Walk into the water to just under waist depth.

    • 2

Grip the retrieval rope in your non-dominant hand. Hold the drop net with the dominant hand. Hold the net so the outer weights hang down while you grip the center of the net.

    • 3

Flip the net through the air much like a flying disc. Throw the net out flat and away from your body. Try to get the drop net to open up fully during the throw. An open, flat circle-shaped net is what you want to achieve.

    • 4

Allow the net to drop into the water and be pulled under by the edge weights. Slowly pull the net back to you with the retrieval rope.

    • 5

Walk toward the shore and the catch bucket, keeping any live catch in the water and net. Pick out the catch from the net while it is in the water . Place the fish into the catch bucket.
