How to Make Hockey Nets

Hockey nets can be expensive and they take up a lot of room in a shed or garage when they are not in use. The answer to both of these problems is the homemade PVC-pipe hockey net. The total cost of all materials will be much less than a store-bought net and the assembly takes only about an hour. The net can be taken apart when not in use and easily stored almost anywhere. This net is youth-sized, but can easily be modified to any size needed.

  • 2 PVC pipes 1.5 inch by 10 feet
  • 6 PVC elbow joints

      Cut the PVC pipe into six pieces. Use the first pipe to make two 51-inch long pieces, leaving 18 inches of scrap. Cut the second pipe to produce two 40-inch and two 20-inch pieces.

      Lay out your netting so that you know which side needs to attach to the top, bottom and sides of the goal.

      Attach an elbow joint to one end of each of the 40-inch pieces. These will be the upright goal posts. Slide the 40-inch PVC through the upright sleeves on the net.

      Slide each of the 20-inch pipes through the net's footing sleeve. Connect the two 20-inch pieces to the 40-inch pieces by attaching them to the open end of the elbow joints. The 20-inch pieces will be the supports for the net and will be on the ground.

      Complete the net by attaching the last four elbow joints to the open ends of the 40- and 20-inch PVC pipes. Thread the two 51-inch pipes through the crossbar and footing sleeves on the net. Secure the 51-inch pipes to the 40- and 20-inch pieces with the elbow joints.

      Make sure that the joints are secure by banging them with your palm or a mallet before playing. One 51-inch pipe should be on the ground, along with the two 20-inch pipes, while the other 51-inch pipe makes up the crossbar at the top.
